Late Start
We had planned to get an early start, so we could make it home early. Needless to say, that didn't happen.

We finally hit the road around 10 a.m. That put us at our halfway point, The Middling Big City (not to be confused with our home in The Big Middling City) around 1:30.

We stopped there to meet some friends at the local watering hole. Okay, it was a mall. Give me a break. I'm trying to make this interesting.

Anyway, we me them there for lunch. For us. Turns out they'd already eaten. But we only get to see each other a couple times a year so we try to get together any time we come through town.

The mall had a special 'play place' set up for kids. JBP had had great fun running through the obstacle course, complete with ball pit and slides, on our lunch break while heading to Ames. He wanted to play again.

Only problem, a mile long line. Turns out the play place was part of the mall's set-up for Santa. The line was kids waiting to see Santa. It was at least an hour long. We didn't have that long to waste. Especially when JBP, quite properly, could give a flying ^%%$$#^^ about Santa.

To help calm the disappointed tears, I told him he could pick out something from the candy store. His pick? A sucker designed so when you put it in your mouth you're showing off wide redlips with crooked teeth. He adored it.

I trashed it as soon as the candy was gone and he wasn't looking. He still hasn't noticed.

Home
We arrived home around 6:30 p.m. only to discover we had a visitor. Turns out our escape artist canine friend Chance had shown up for a visit again.

He was excited to see us. JBP was excited to see him. Ja and Se weren't so sure. After all, we'd been gone for four days and now that we were back they had to share our attention.

There was a little more growling and snapping at poor Chance than he's used to. Poor puppy was just a touch confused.
