A Sad Farewell

Less than 10 minutes ago, I learned that the West Wing's John Spencer died today of a heart attack in a Los Angeles hospital.

Spencer portrayed Leo McGarry on the West Wing, currently the Democratic Vice Presidential nominee on the show.

Spencer has been with the show since it's beginning in 1999. His work on the West Wing capped a long TV and film career that dates back to the 1960's, including the portrayal of Henry Anderson on the Patty Duke Show.

Spencer won numerous awards throughout his career, including a Best Supporting Actor Emmy for his role as Leo McGarry.

Spencer was an acknowledged alcoholic, who remained sober ever since getting therapy. He also recently (1999) quit smoking, which he described as "hell on earth".

John Spencer was 58 years old. He died four days before his 59th birthday. Rest in Peace.
