Puerto Rican plebiscite

A presidential task force thinks it's time for a new plebiscite in Puerto Rico.

For those in the know, that's a territory-wide vote to learn what the people of Puerto Rico want to happen. Do they want to remain a U.S. Territory? Do they want to become the 51st state? Do they want to become their own country?

Puerto Rico became a U.S. Territory following the Spanish American War in 1896. Since then residents have regularly voted in plebiscites.

The most recent plebiscite was held in 1998 when "none of the above" (essentially remain a territory) won by just over 50%.

If the answer remains the same this time around, the task force says regular votes should be held to inform Congress of what Puerto Ricans want.

Especially important, seeing as how, like Washington, D.C., they have no voting representation in Congress but must follow any laws passed there. Sound familiar, anyone?

Pres. Clinton convened the task force in 2000.

All I can say is, "51! 51! 51!"
